Juan Soto almost certainly made himself some money this postseason. The only question is if the Yankees are the ones who will give it to him. Soto’s free agency figures to be the second-most lucrative in MLB history after Ohtani’s $700 million deal, and it could be worth even more when accounting for inflation due to the Dodgers star’s deferrals.< https://otceed.com/ /p>
The list of postseason rules evolved over time. From 1919 to 1921, the best-of-nine format first used in 1903 was employed. In 1925, Brooklyn owner Charles Ebbets persuaded others to adopt as a permanent rule the 2–3–2 home game pattern first used in 1924. Previously, the pattern had been to alternate by game or to make another arrangement convenient to both clubs. The 2–3–2 pattern has been used ever since save for the 1943 and 1945 World Series, which followed a 3–4 pattern due to World War II travel restrictions; in 1944, the normal pattern was followed because both teams were based in the same home ballpark.
The number of teams was unchanged until 1961, with fourteen expansion teams joining MLB since then, all of which except the Seattle Mariners have appeared in at least one World Series. Of the 28 Series in which at least one expansion team has played, including three Series (2015, 2019, and 2023) in which both teams were expansion teams, expansion teams have won 13 of them, which is 46.4% of all series in which an expansion team played and 10.9% of all 119 series played since 1903. In 2015, the first World Series featuring only expansion teams was played between the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets.
Against loaded lineups, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole and Dodgers trade acquisition Jack Flaherty — both of whom grew up rooting for the teams they now suit up for — managed to mount a rare starting pitchers’ duel in the midst of an especially bullpen-oriented October.
In 1901, Ban Johnson, president of the Western League, a minor league organization, formed the American League to take advantage of the National League’s 1900 contraction from twelve teams to eight. Johnson and fellow owners raided the National League and signed away many star players, including Cy Young and Jimmy Collins. Johnson had a list of 46 National Leaguers he targeted for the American League; by 1902, all but one had made the jump. : 99 The constant raiding, however, nixed the idea of a championship between the two leagues. Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss, whose team ran away with the 1902 National League pennant, was open to a postseason contest and even said he would allow the American League champion to stock its roster with all-stars. : 105 However, Johnson had spoken of putting a team in Pittsburgh and even attempted to raid the Pirates’ roster in August 1902, which soured Dreyfuss. At the end of the season, however, the Pirates played a group of American League All-Stars in a four-game exhibition series, winning two games to one, with one tie. : 102

ST. LOUIS – It’s been 12 years since David Freese earned his place in St. Louis Cardinals lore, playing hero twice in an epic comeback that paved the way to the Cardinals’ most recent World Series title.
As the years go by the loss becomes harder and harder to think about. At the time, the Rangers still looked like a perennial dynasty. They had a premier farm system and young stars like Elvis Andrus and Neftali Feliz.
Actually, here’s the best way to sum it up. This is a line from the very first game story I sent that night, in the eighth inning. When I filed this story, it was for a 7-4 Rangers win — before the Cardinals started coming back, before they tied it up, before the exchange of runs in the 10th, before Freese’s walkoff. Before this game was ever a classic, I wrote this:

The narrative that plays out isn’t a novel, it’s a collection of short stories, each exiting in isolation. Each Episode stands alone. Each character too. They are just skins to play a class on. The only thing that ties them together is they all seem to use the same tired phrases to respond to environmental events. Across cultures and languages accents (e’erybody speaks English) “you’re rat food now” uttered to a dead zeke is the only real thing that binds this world together. And while there are videos to watch and backstories to read in the character screen to get a sense of who they are, you’re never really invited to care because you know you’re only on the ride with them for four short missions, then onto the next group of four characters in the next episode. You don’t even unlock the “intro” videos for the character until after you’ve completed a level on them, even further removing you from having a care to give about their backstory.
