Jim Palmer of the Orioles shut out the Dodgers on four hits in Game 2 of the World Series on Oct. 6, 1966. Just nine days shy of his 21st birthday, Palmer became the youngest pitcher to win a World Series game. https://palmbeachsunsfc.com/ (National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum)

“It’s October, nothing’s gonna be easy,” Freeman said. “The last three outs are the hardest. But all confidence involved in Blake, and Blake handed over to Alex. He got the out there. So we’re up two games. It’s a good start.”

The Dodgers have a commanding lead in the World Series—except, they now face the prospect of a cross-country trip into the toughest place for visitors to play postseason baseball, their pitching is wearing thin, and the best player in baseball might be gone from the top of their lineup.

But for six days after Baker’s heroics, the rain would not stop in Philadelphia. With the opposing teams so close geographically, the World Series alternated games between the Polo Grounds and Shibe Park – and some suggested that Game 4 should be moved to New York City in an attempt to play the game.

Of course, Yankees fans are aware of the only time in baseball history a team has come back after losing the first three games of a best-of-seven series. It was 2004 ALCS when the Red Sox did it to the Yankees en route to their first World Series title in 86 years.

“We really like Kaiden Wilson, we think he’s a super-talented guy,” coach Jim Schlossnagle said. “Thought he threw well except two pitches. He made two mistakes against a great team, and they got him.”

The Beavers were one pop-up in foul territory away from elimination in Game 2, but they capitalized on a Razorbacks mistake, rallied to force Game 3, and then handed the ball to Kevin Abel. The freshman pitcher threw a complete game shutout, the fourth in CWS history and the first in 25 years.

Even though he’s in the lineup, it remains to be seen if Ohtani is at the full extent of his capabilities. But either way, the Dodgers are in a great position in this Series. Both games at Dodger Stadium came down to a bases-loaded situation, and they both ended with an L.A. victory. Now, the Dodgers are just two wins away from their second World Series title in the last five years and their first in a full season since 1988.

In the top of the eighth, the Yankees sent in reliever Tommy Kahnle, who had not allowed an earned run in eight postseason games. Hernandez once again led off with a single, Edman followed with a broken-bat infield single, and Will Smith followed with a four-pitch walk. With the bases loaded, Kahnle was relieved by Luke Weaver, pitching in his third straight game. Weaver allowed a Gavin Lux sacrifice fly that scored Hernández, tying the game at 6–6, which moved Edman to third. Shohei Ohtani next reached on a catcher’s interference, once again loading the bases. On the first pitch of his at-bat, Betts hit a sacrifice fly to score Edman, giving the Dodgers a 7–6 lead.

The struggles of Yankees captain Aaron Judge dominated the headlines ahead of Game 3. He entered the contest 1-for-9 with six strikeouts in this World Series but received a warm, encouraging welcome from the home crowd on Monday. After striking out in his first at-bat on a nasty cutter from Buehler, Judge connected cleanly in his second trip to the plate, lofting a flyball to left.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tommy Edman hit a solo home run off Rodón as the Dodgers took a 1–0 lead. Juan Soto hit a solo home run off Yamamoto in the top of the third inning to tie the game. In the bottom of the inning, Mookie Betts hit a single followed by a Teoscar Hernández two-run home run and a solo home run by Freddie Freeman to give the Dodgers a 4–1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Shohei Ohtani had a left shoulder subluxation when he slid in his steal attempt at second base, as he was caught stealing to end the seventh inning; he lay at second base in pain until his trainer tended him to leave the field. With the Dodgers leading by three runs, Blake Treinen was sent in to close out the game in the top of the ninth. He gave up a leadoff single to Soto, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Aaron Judge struck out, Giancarlo Stanton hit a ground ball that bounced off the third base bag and into the outfield, scoring Soto. The Yankees then loaded the bases with an Anthony Rizzo hit-by-pitch and Jazz Chisholm Jr. single, but Volpe struck out for the second out. After the Volpe at-bat, Treinen was replaced with Alex Vesia, who got pinch-hitter Jose Trevino to fly out on the first pitch, ending the game and giving Los Angeles a 2–0 series lead.

Stanton has been one of the few sources of offensive excellence for the Yankees this month; to see him thrown out in such a crucial moment felt helplessly dispiriting, like a grandparent tumbling down a flight of stairs. It was a crushing moment, with one of the only Yankees bright spots falling victim to his own physical limitations.

Yankees: Rizzo is playing through two fractured fingers on his right hand, which is a pain tolerance issue, as the fractures won’t heal until the offseason. Infielder DJ LeMahieu (right hip impingement) has been continuing to hit and field throughout the playoffs.
